I’m A Celebrity ‘s Beverley Callard was grateful for Coronation Street legend Julie Goodyear’s sense of humour during her cancer ordeal.
Bev, who played Liz McDonald in the ITV soap, needed a hysterectomy when she was just 33.
The actress, who left the I’m A Celeb castle last night, says she was inundated with sympathy and support from her co-stars, but it was Julie’s sense of humour that really saw her through.
Beverley, who had an 18-month-old baby at the time said she’d often lie awake at night crying and wondering if her womanhood was coming to an end.
But Julie, who played Bet Lynch, had the exact tonic that she needed.
Bev told the Daily Star : “Julie Goodyear was fantastic. I’d had loads of people saying, ‘Oh, you poor thing,’ and that just makes you feel worse than ever. But Julie had a different approach.
“One day I was in my dressing room and I heard this knocking on the door. When I went to open it, Julie was standing there wearing a balaclava. ‘What are you doing?’ I said. ‘Just thought you needed something to make you laugh’, she giggled.
“Julie came and sat down in my dressing room and said, ‘Listen, I’ve had a hysterectomy and you’re going to be fine, but let me tell you this – afterwards you’re going to s**g like a snow leopard’. We both fell about giggling.”
Beverley, 63, left the castle last night alongside journalist Victoria Derbyshire.
As she chatted with Ant and Dec, she joked she’d be giving her on-screen son Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, a slap the next time she sees him.
Dec told Bev: “Your on-screen son, Simon Gregson, had said, ‘Rebecca, your daughter, is a vegan and I’m sure Bev’s done it for all the right reasons – her health and to save the planet’.
“After a pause, he added, ‘And if you believe that then I’m a mango’.”
Beverley laughed as Ant urged her to “come clean” about whether or not she turned vegan for the show but she set the record straight.
She insisted: “No. I started it in March because I had an operation and I saw this documentary that said your joints heal quicker if you’re plant-based. So that’s what I’ve been doing.”
